A Short Week Ahead

With a short week ahead, let's take a look back!

We have been quite busy with hands-on learning in science and are trying to wrap up some loose ends before the long weekend.

Reading:

We have laid the sturdy groundwork for our upcoming novel, Among the Hidden, by Margaret Peterson Haddix. We will begin reading this week!

Social Studies:

We took the opportunity to link social studies and reading together with our upcoming novel unit by thoroughly exploring population pyramids, push and pull factors, and emigration versus immigration. Students took a quiz last week and they will be entered into Skyward by the end of the day on Monday.

Writing:

Once upon a time there was a lesson on introductions. We have been spending time working on GOOD introductions and not fairy tale starters. Additionally, we are exploring the parts of a conclusion to help end papers on a positive note rather than just THE END.

Science: It's been shaking and quaking here in Oasis!! We have done two earthquake builds where students engineered structures to withstand the mighty force of the jello shake table AND dropping from the stairwells. Exploring Myth Busters has given insight into how structures have evolved to withstand nature's fury.

Prior to this, students modeled plate movement with a graham cracker and cool whip lab! It sure was sweet.

Math: We are jumping into the exciting world of functions! We have spent the last few days discussing what a function is and is not and how to tell. This week we are beginning to address function notation and utilizing our substitution skills.

Curious about functions? Check out these cool links! What is a function? Function Notation
